brass bands in the world.

Haslingdon and
Helmshore Band
The Haslingden & Helmshore Bands have been in
existence since approximately 1870. They were known as the
Haslingden Boro Temperance Band and the Helmshore Public
Prize Band and the two bands were rivals for 100 years.
However in 1972 the two bands decided to merge to form the
modern Haslingden & Helmshore Band.

The band was formed one hundred years ago by William
Thomas Bestwick, a Sheffield Police Inspector whose
intention was that the new band should “give pleasure
to all who would listen, whilst playing for their own
pleasure and recreation.” With himself as bandmaster
and leader he set about raising funds for instruments and
uniforms According to the surviving documentation, laying
out the band rules and constitution, the exact date of the
foundation was 4th of May 1900 and the new band was given
the name of Sheffield Recreation Brass Band

The Alexandra Brass Quintet made its professional debut in
1993, and hasn't looked back since. Its members are drawn
from a variety of backgrounds, including the Birmingham
Conservatoire, the Royal Northern College of Music and top
flight brass bands. Their talent and enthusiasm has led to
many professional engagements, both in England and abroad.

Founded in 2002 by students at the Royal Northern College
of Music, Manchester, with players from England, Wales, the
US, and Switzerland!
The
Groves Brass Ensemble
The Groves Brass Ensemble was formed in September 2001 by
five first year brass students at the Royal Northern
College of Music, Manchester UK. The quintet owes its name
to the great English Conductor, Sir Charles Groves.
Thomas Osborne, a former member of Tapton Brass, is now a member of the Groves.
John Barker, Professional Trumpeter
John began a professional career at the age of 22, performing at The Hippodrome
London, with more recent engagements at Kensington Palace London and The ICC
Birmingham. John has recorded nine solo albums with more planned for the future.
